Appeal to Mr. A Ambani
So Mr. A Ambani must be feeling great currently, as he has made a hefty donation to Wharton, to name an auditorium after his father. Kudos on his success and sincere wishes that he takes ADAG to newer heights.
And with all these well-wishes, I would like to sneak in a plead closer to my heart. It seems that the reliance group (or the ADAG), has forgotten that there is an engineering institute they are supposed to take care of. I must say I do not know the inner realities but it does seem so. The reservation bill (or the DAIICT bill), faculty-student ratio and really disappointing placements provide reasons good enough for anyone to give DAIICT some serious thought. Is this university going to survive another ten years. I would refrain from answering that question due to certain hopes and aspirations. I just pray that it does, somehow.
And that is when you need the parent body to understand the graveness of the situation and prepare an action plan.
Or we will just remain an orphaned child of the Ambani group.

rollercoaster life - II
and minor events are not mentioned, for the exact same reason that was given in the post. They shall go with me to my grave; or the crematorium. wherever.
Am enjoying swimming these days. For the seniors who visit my blog regularly (there are many of them!), I should tell them about Wellocity.
Its a new 'health resort' sort of thing opened in Infocity. They have a nice, small pool, cool gym and aerobics and yoga for the inflexible types. For people in the last semester, this thing has been a blessing as we get something to do with the enormous amount of leisure time we have.
Time will be a luxury in the later life. After these four months, I'll say it should be.

rollercoaster life
Though my afternoons are pretty much the same.... so are the late nights. Me and my laptop. :) . So much time I have wasted/spent in front of this piece of beauty. Output could have been a lot better.
My friends' team won Imagine Cup India today... great news. I have personally never seen someone pushing the limits of human abilities so much. Amazing effort. God. Forces me to think if I have that in me to do something like that. I don't know. I liked to be pushed/guided by someone. But at times, can do without it. My BTP for example. There have been small surprises along the way. Felt nice at times. Depressing at others.
And there were other minor events. Mentioning them won't "reflect good" on me. :)

Why is India doing this now, 30 years after China built its missiles? Because India, with U.S. encouragement, has finally decided, after a half-century of "nonalignment," that it wants to play the great-power game too. It has the resources these days, and it's just too galling to be left out when the Big Five get together to sort out the world. Even if playing the great-power game means you end up playing the nuclear-war game, too.

Now this is something that ain't gonna happen: c'mon, the politicians find it hard to stand a guy who actually wants to work. And NM will be wasted there as President here has no real job actually - a powerless post of prestige.

Centre fails to file plea against SC stay on education quota

Now come on dear politicians. Show the same level of enthusiasm that you preserve for tasks related to development and progress. Don't be biased towards being lethargic. Oh no! You are all about sustaining these biases actually. So you will try your best (that is forcing the judiciary to pass out your whims as their verdicts) to divide Indians even further for your vote-banks. Way to go my country's politicians; at least somewhere you show consistency as a part of your character.

Today's top reads
1. Why Microsoft Should Fear Apple
It isn't about Apple's market share or even its quarterly sales numbers. It's about perception.
http://www.computerworld.com/action/article.do?command=viewArticleBasic&articleId=9014686
May be it is only after I converted to Mac that I've started seeing so many articles debating Mac vs. PC. Some are obviously biased, idolizing Apple beyond reason. But some have been decent and helpful.
The one linked here gives a nice overall picture. Anyone considering buying a new machine should read.
2. Wireless Power
New physics theory could cut the cord on power chargers for gadgets.
http://www.technologyreview.com/read_article.aspx?id=18341
An idea we pondered over during the initial phase of our Design Project in our sophomore year. Though a professor simply squashed it demanding more "fun" stuff (he already had taken students working on hardcore technology and therefore wanted to have some variety).
Carrying cables with laptops and mobiles has always been a big restriction. It desperately needs a solution. Lets hope some researcher somewhere makes it work. He'll be rich beyond imagination.

A Smarter Web
New technologies will make online search more intelligent--and may even lead to a "Web 3.0."

Since I'm reading on (won't say working on) Semantic web as my BTech Project is somewhat based on it, such news items catch my eye occasionally. Nice read for those new to the idea.
Also watch Tim Berners-Lee (must have heard of him) on the same website.

IT stocks battered as rupee hits 7-yr high
http://www.financialexpress.com/fe_full_story.php?content_id=159349
Now when rupee is gaining against dollar, it has many people worried. Funny thing it is, like inflation. I remember after the Pokharan tests when sanctions were imposed, rupee declined from around 35/dollar to 43/dollar. And then when US and most others rolled back the sanctions, I naively thought rupee would go back to the old value. Still don't understand much of the dynamics that goes behind these changes but its not as bad as that 9th standard kid's perception.
I guess IT (and others affected by it) won't have a problem in finding a way around (like switching over to Euro, as they mentioned somewhere)

Supreme Court wakes up, it seems
http://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/NEWS/India/SC_stays_27_quota_for_OBCs_in_IITs_IIMs/articleshow/1826428.cms
Few of the key points mentioned in this news were:
* The apex court held that the 1931 census could not be a determinative factor for identifying the OBCs for the purpose of providing reservation.
* "What may have been the data in 1931 census cannot be a determinative factor now," the Bench said disagreeing with the Centre's mode of selection of relevant data for providing reservation to the OBCs.
* The Court said the State was empowered to enact an affirmative act to help the backward classes but this action could not be unduly adverse to those who were left out.
* "Reservation cannot be permanent and appear to perpetuate backwardness," the Bench observed.
Though the political scenario is in shambles where opportunistic tendencies rule every action of our MPs, I think, SC has been the only hope of retaining any semblance of reason in this country. But, like CBI, SC also has to dance to the tunes of our politicians, though not that evidently. So after giving reservations a 'go-ahead' when Arjun Singh rolled out his plans last year, they have come back at it, citing the out-dated census as an inefficient reason behind such a scheme.
It has been exactly a year since Mandal-II took place. I distinctly remember that period of time when all the students were feeling the urge to standup and protest against it. Our 'march against reservation' was a moderate success (despite the disappointed press that was expecting some "drama"). It was great to watch some 800 students walking in April-sun (17th Apr, to be exact), towards the collectorate. Some 350-400 were DAIICTians, others from NIFT (some Gujarati newpaper claimed students from NLU were also a part of it). All those meetings in OAT, mailing (spamming ?), trips to police station and incessant calls, to media, NIFT students and collector's assistant. We put up something nice to be our first time. Didn't we?
Lets see what happens next; though I'm not very hopeful of a turn-around. Meritocracy is not the principle our "leader" believe in (what else can explain their being there :) ). India, as always, finds a way to survive amidst all the diverse forces trying to tear it apart into pieces. So lets hope.

Just noticed:
Admission process derailed
http://www.dnaindia.com/report.asp?NewsID=1087847
Sad and inconvenient for many students. The timing could have been better. But better late than never. If this results in finally squashing all forms of quotas then the price in terms of admission-process-inconvenience is meager.

For those seeking admission -
(www.daiict.ac.in)
Thats the name of my institute. It offers a BTech degree in ICT and there are no other streams. The four year course is recognized by UGC. [not from AICTE - Institute administration says that we do not need an approval from AICTE. This is usually not a problem as students have got admission in IITs, IIMs, government services and in other major fields were such things matter. But still, as of now, no one can claim this to be a non-issue in all the fields.]
Almost all the students in their 12th standard who are preparing for engineering entrance exams take AIEEE - the de-facto standard of such exams in India. Admissions to DAIICT are also done on the basis of AIEEE ranks. More details can be found on the institute's website.
This post is sort of an insider's view of DAIICT, aimed at helping those seeking admissions to decide whether they are fit for the college and vice-versa. I have tried to be very objective and the points have lengthy explanations for each of them.
Don't join DAIICT if,
- you are damn sure that you want admission in some top university abroad.
- you are damn sure that you want the highest package offered to freshers anywhere in India.
- your parents take all the decisions regarding your life and its not possible for your to make them see your point (or worse, you don't even have a point).
- hard-work is not your cup of tea.
- you always need someone to goad you on to move forward.
You may still get in your dream university or get that highly coveted job (odds are improving with every passing year, in fact) but don't carp about it and blame it on the college if you don't.
Think of joining if,
- you believe in platitudes like "man carves his own destiny" etc etc.
- you want to learn how to think independently, outside the tutelage of your guardians /peers /professors.
- you like taking minor risks and work to force a favorable result.
- you don't mind taking on the sclerotic administration head-on and have the enthusiasm to make things happen for you in lieu of waiting for them.
Leave a comment if you want to know anything more. Will be glad to help.

Limited net access - to do or not to do.
http://economictimes.indiatimes.com/quickies/1738786.cms
Is DAIICT headed towards some sort of a similar fate? Seems likely. And may be, just may be, it is time the institute took this drastic step. Things are not that good here. Students are already pissed off with the type of placements we get to see but there might be reasons that we tend to overlook. A complex situation it is. Hopefully things will improve in next couple of years.
Definitely we have some Profs sulky enough to enforce something like this.
24 hrs internet access definitely has its negatives. Just look up the dc++ repertoire of myriad things. It is mind-boggeling indeed. All that time can be put somewhere else. This will at least get us better speeds. :)

Laws in Ninth Schedule after 1973 open to judicial review: SC
http://www.hindu.com/thehindu/holnus/000200701111201.htm
NEW DELHI, Jan. 11: In a significant judgment a nine judge constitution bench of the Supreme Court on Thursday held that no blanket immunity from judicial review would be available to laws put under the Ninth Schedule of the Constitution.
:
:The Bench rejected the argument that once Parliament in his wisdom puts a law under the Ninth Schedule for the welfare of the people, such a law could not be subjected to judicial scrutiny. The Bench said giving such a blanket power to Parliament to include any law under the Ninth Schedule would violate the basic structure doctrine and would also amount to destroying the fundamental rights granted to the citizen.
Nearly 280 laws or legislations were included in the Ninth Schedule to take away the jurisdiction of the courts to examine the legality of such laws. The Tamil Nadu reservation act providing for 69 per cent reservation, over and above what had been permissible under the apex court’s Mandal judgement, viz, 50 per cent was one such important legislation included in the Ninth Schedule. The Parliament also included several other legislations relating to social security measure in the Ninth Schedule to ensure that these laws were kept beyond judicial review.

A sad day - indeed
[ Biju Janata Dal's T Satpathy was the sole voice of dissent - So out of 273 member, only one had balls. Thats my govt. Thats my nation ]
Replying to the debate, which saw members cutting across party lines praising the Bill and demanding its application to the private sector, HRD minister Arjun Singh promised to shortly bring a separate legislation on unaided educational institutions. [ They are not done with screwing the nation. Some work needs to be done, still. ]
Participating in the debate, several members demanded quotas in private sector and judiciary [ Oh, great! Wonder has the idea of having reservations in Lok Sabha ever occured to them. That will be unanimously squashed. But lets corrupt everything else by then. ]. Government has already announced that the quota regime would be made operational from the academic year 2007. The Bill provides for a mandatory increase of seats in central educational institutions over a maximum period of three years beginning 2007.

And then this source snaps... trips... cuts itself loose... disappears.
Disappoinment follows.
And then you start looking for another similar box. Another piece of advertisment, another someone, another web link, another email address. Knowing somewhere deep within that the same story is bound to repeat. Someone watching the game likes this particular part of it. And it goes on in cycles. On and on and on... and off!

Lynching of criminals on rise in Bihar
In Bihar people seem to be running out on patience and have started delivering 'instant justice' by lynching suspected criminals.
At least 25 people have been lynched in the past three weeks in the state, which even otherwise has a high crime rate.
Now this is something that was if not totally expected, but still somewhere round the corner for the state that is going faster and faster into the dungeons of crime and anarchy. After the lawlessness imposed on this unfortunate state by its govt. servants, Bihar has reached this pathetic state where no faith remains in the governing system. This was bound to happen and may well turn out to be the only solution to their problems.
Islamic nations are known for their 'bizzare' punishments that often cross the line of humanity. But for all this barborous acts, i guess, one thing that must be ensured is more order and fear of law. The present situation of Bihar demands such actions to thwart the reigning mafia groups and restablish it to state of sanity.

These are just essays, but they're very well written essays, and if zipped together, you actually get an e-anthology.
If you know of more, do add to this thread. They're written by very intelligent people.
Hint:
if you google 'kellogg techventure anthology', you will find others like these, just as brilliantly written by top MBAs.

Amendment to take life out of RTI Act: CIC
What is wrong with my country (i know thats a mere rhetoric as the simple answer is - our politicians). But still...
as this report says, and also on what I have been reading about in newspapers about this wonderful act, if the mentioned step is taken, we are just ruining the single step we took in years to eradicate corruption from the system
OP Kejriwal, member, Central Information Commissioner on Thursday night said the Union Cabinet's decision to exclude officials' notings on government files from the purview of the Right to Information Act will take "life out of the law".
"Information minus the file notings amount to taking the life out of the RTI Act," Kejriwal said in an interview to a private news channel.
"There were hundreds, literally hundreds, who got their ration cards, electricity connections only by filing an application where they asked what was the daily progress of the applications and who were the officers dealing with their applications.
"Now if the file notings are closed, the entire process is stalled," he said.
Kejriwal said, "Once you try to save the names of officials, you try to hide the way the file has moved. What remains in the Act?"
The basic objective of the Act, he pointed out, is to prevent and put a stop to corruption.
"We earnestly hope that the government sees to it that the Act remains its basic strength," he said.
